This is a hotfix package. You'll have to contact Microsoft Product
Support Services to get access to it. The information you need is in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892094

Word2002 question

I already checked that link, it says to contact Microsoft, and there's a link
to a 1-800 phone number that doesn't seem to work.

How do I get the hotfix if the phone number doesn't work?

It's possible that it may work from other calling locations, but I'm not
able to use that phone number. What's the alternative?

Thanks

More information:
I called the number on the support site that the article in your link,
linked to: 800 642-7676. There was a recorded message that said the call
could not be completed as dialed.

Word2002 question

There's another support number that costs $50 per call or email... that's
ridiculous, I'm not going to pay $50 to get a hotfix for a bug in their
product... why is it so difficult to get a hotfix?

Have I mentioned how much I dislike corporate lawyers? They insist on the
waffle wording in the article:

"Note: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question."

In real-world terms, you won't be charged anything if all you ask for is the
hotfix. If you say something like "Oh, by the way, how do I get my spell
checker to work?", then you're into chargeable territory. Up front you will
be asked for a credit card number in case you're careless enough to wander
over the line -- so stick to the one issue in the article.

And I don't know why they make it so hard, or at least they try to make it
look hard until you try it. Maybe it's to reduce the number of people they
have to pay to answer phones.

Word2002 question

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your help.

I can't connect with the pay per call number either, a recording says to
"please check the number".

I certainly shouldn't have to provide any billing information to get a fix
for a bug in their product. What a waste of time. Why don't they make the
hotfixes available for download on the support site?

How can I get the hotfix without releasing billing information to Microsoft?

Why don't they make the
hotfixes available for download on the support site?

Because hotfixes are not as thoroughly tested with every conceivable
combination of hardware and software as they need to be before they are
included in a service pack or update. They're just temporary stopgaps for
urgent, major bugs. Because you use them at your own risk, the person you
talk to will want to make sure that you actually have the described problem
(and that there is not any other solution) before offering the hotfix.

What area are you located in? At the top left of
the MS Support page you are using does it match the
country you're calling from?

In the U.S. both the (800) 642-7676 and
(800) 936-5700 numbers worked for me but
there are other numbers outside of the U.S.

If you're in the U.S. and calling from work it's
possible that certain 800 numbers are blocked.
