Which file format? Make zip bar codes?

Stephen

Hi,

This is my first posting so, if I screw up on protocol, please excuse
the errors.

First question: I just got my first Mac (G4 dual) and am using
MSWord2004 (instead of Word Perfect on the PC). How do you suggest I
save Mac Word files so that I can transfer them back to the PC and Word
Perfect?

Second question: Is there an easy way to take my 1600 Word Perfect
files on the PC and transfer them to MSWord on the Mac?

Third question: Anyone have a fast, easy way to get the zip code bar
to print on envelopes? Using <Tools> <Envelopes> is slow, have to
move the bar code from the top to the bottom of the address (why is it
at the top to start with?), and then have to type in all of the info,
choose <manual> paper selection and utter a prayer. Can I make up an
envelope form with the return address and recycle that form?

Thanks for wading through the long email, if you did, and even greater
thanks for some suggestions. Stephen and his feline buddy ... Dali

Hi Stephen,

You'll find you get better results when you post each subject separately.
In this case the envelopes question should have been separate (especially
since I don't have an answer for it :).

As for the Word Perfect questions ... While there's more than one way to do
some of this transferring, I think you should investigate DataViz's MacLink
Plus <http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/>.

The (free) alternatives are:

1) Save the files as RTF documents which can be done on either platform and
can be read by either platform (though loss of some formatting is probable
if you're moving from the newer application Word 2004 in this case I
assume to the older since the older may not support all the bells and
whistles of the newer. Also, once the document is in RTF, you will have
lost the structural underpinning of the originating application).

2) Save out of WordPerfect to Word's .doc format. But you can't do it the
other way around.

Hope this helps.

Yeeesss....i think. You can certainly save the envelope. The barcode is a
bit trickier, but I think I've figured it out.

The barcode is a field generated by bookmarking the address. If you show
bookmarks (Word | Preferences, View tab), then if you are careful to enter
the new address between the bookmarks (square brackets), you should be able
to update the barcode by hitting F9. I've done a quick test. Let me know
if that works for you. It can be a little tricky to change the text without
deleting the bookmarks, I at times had to use shift-arrow to select the
exact text. You may still have to select manual feed every time.

Once you have created it to your taste, Save As as a template. Put it in
apps/office/templates/My Templates, and use the Project Gallery to access
new documents from it in the future.

By the way, the post office does not care if the barcode is above the
address.
