Which knowledge base article to follow for Password not retained error

Ever since I downgrade from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2002 have been having problems. First Address book was not working....fixed that somehow

Now, Outlook keeps prompting for a password for a POP3 account that I created, and does not remember the password even though the checkbox asking it to do that is checked

Found two articles in the knowledge base and I am not confused which one to follow. Both say it applies to Outlook 2002. I am using it on Windows 2000 Professional

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 290684
OL2002: The Save Password Setting Is Not Saved When You Connect to a POP3 Serve
This is dated 6/11/2002

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 836664
Your password is not retained in Outlook 2002 and Outlook Expres
This is dated 3/3/2004 and it has a link to the other Knowledge base article

How am I supposed to figure out which instructions to follow especially when it involves mucking around with the Registry which is scary

I would follow the first one, the win2k instructions are about halfway
down...

I tried that and no luck. It still prompts for the password like every 5 seconds !!
It is really annoying, they have been having this problem in Outlook 2000, 2002 and now someone reported even in 2003.

Created a new Profile and it still kept asking for the password and would not remember it. Next created a new user id in Windows 2000 and started outlook and created an email account for that same userid and ISP and same behaviour again. It just would not remember the password. I have two other email accounts and they work fine

I did not create a new profile after making this fix. I had already created a new one instead of using the default one because of problems with making Contacts entries appear in the address book. I can create one more profile and see if that fixes it or if that also fails, I am thinking of creating another user id in Windows 2000 and moving current users data to that id, as that should probably create a totally new HKEY_CURRENT_USER tree in the Registries
