which office version do i need?

i am using office 97 at home and work, the job site is upgrading to
office 2000 pro. my os at home is xp home, do i purchase office 2000
or office xp to maintain complete compatibility. i already
experienced a problem with a word doc created in 2000 and not saved
into 97 format. tia...sam
