Which specific files have not been backed up?

Ms. Fanny

Hello team,

I have an scheduled backup for all notebooks; it supposes to run every hour,
generating two copies of each files.

However when I try the option 'back up all notebooks now' today, it came up
a message indicating me there are some files paths longer than 256 characters
and I need to reestructure/rename my notebooks, because they could not be
backed up.

That message took my breath away... because I already have uploaded six
hundreds of files. So... I consult you: Is there a way to identify/visualize
which files have that inconvenience?

Thanks!!

There is no way from OneNote to easily determine this.

Here's what I would do.

My notebooks are all stored either on a thumb drive or in My Documents. On
my computer, that means C:\Users\John\Documents\OneNote Notebooks

From this, I can start the long process of looking at each subfolder from
this and keeping rough track of long sub folder names. If I noticed one
which is getting terribly long, such as C:\Users\John\Documents\OneNote
Notebooks\My section group\My Taxes\1993\Federal Tax Return\All
Forms\Itemized Items , I would copy that text from the address bar and paste
into notepad. I would either count the letter myself or save the text file
and look at the file size (you could also paste into Word if you have it and
get a letter count).

Suppose this is too many letters. I would start to move items around or
rename the folders. OneNote is pretty resilient with the renaming. If I
were to change the name of one of the folders in
C:\Users\John\Documents\OneNote Notebooks\My section Group\My Taxes .... to
\tax (instead of my taxes), the section group in OneNote will be named tax
the next time I browse to it in OneNote.

There are probably utilities which help locate long file names. You could
perform an internet search for them - just be sure to back everything up
before running them.
