Like John I did the update with absolutely no problem whatsoever.
Not suggesting that this is the case here, but just as general information:
Sometimes the system involved may already have certain problems which are
not obvious until something related gets changed - such as an update. The
update doesn't actually *cause* the problem but acts as a catalyst & causes
the pre-existing problem to surface.
I'd suggest that you run Disk Utilities - Repair Disk Permissions before
downloading any update (MS, Apple, whatever) & make sure you have *none* of
the Office apps running when you apply the update.

I've been reading the messages here and elsewhere and there seems to
be more issues with the 11.3.8 update than usual. Before I decide to
install the update, I'd like to know if many people did not have any
problems with the 11.3.8 update. Tell me, is Office running fine for
you after the current update?
First, remember that the only messages you'll see here (and likely
"elsewhere") are from those that have problems - when an installation
goes smoothly, people don't post to say that. There have been somewhat
more problems posted than is usual, but I'd guess that's still less than
a dozen threads.
The update went fine for me, and I've not heard of any problems from my
school clients (with over 1500 installations), and I usually hear within
hours if they have a problem.
Of course, the problems posted here are real, and so there's no
guarantee. But if Office is working well for you now, odds are that it
will update without problem.
