Who or What is Tom Ogilvy?

Who exactly is Tom Ogilvy?
If anyone is asking why I'm posing this question then just scroll down and
look at his response to a very simple posting about *Automating a
Printout*.

What is this guy smoking?

Hi Harry,
Who exactly is Tom Ogilvy?

Perhaps the most prolific and most respected contributor the NG.

Perhaps, more interestingly, who is Stella who now appears in the guise of
Harry?

All that was needed was to add the word "Loop" to the front of "until bFlag =
True" and it works perfectly.

If you have to ask, get to the back of the line, because it's an honor
to receive an answer from Tom

Who exactly is Tom Ogilvy?

Well, it is very easy to find out.
Not sure if this is compiled somewhere, but he is probably the one that gets
the highest percentage
answers exactly right in one go.

Let's put it like this - if you don't know how to begin to figure out making
your sheets print, then you probably don't have enough understanding to
judge Tom!

Who exactly is Tom Ogilvy?

And, Tom always treats others, from novice to expert, with respect.

Most people here do that, but occasionally...

Not Tom... he always takes an approach that says others can learn.

Thanks.

Here are the posting Statistics. Kinda fun to see who is posting the most. I
spend probably about an hour a day at posting and I barely even rank compared
to some... It makes you wonder if Tom ever sleeps or if he is just here
24/7...

http://www.contextures.com/xlngstatsAnnual.html

By the way Tom if you are smoking anything can you share... Whatever it is
I'm sure it must be good.

PS. Stella you kinda got jumped on a bit hard but take it with a grain of
salt. Next time you are unhappy with the quality of a response just ask for
some clarification. I can say that the calibler of the people responding here
is excellent. Do they make mistakes sometimes... Absolutely... but in general
they know their stuff and can get you through some might tricky problems.

It would be even more interesting to split the statistics in answer- and
question- postings.
Also would nice to show a longer list ...

Thanks Peter, that is an interesting one.
At least now I can find my name on a list.

I guess he's one of the people who help me get out of a tight spot. I don't
pay them for it, I don't make them do it, I guess it's just what they love to
do.

I always feel greatful for all the Tom Ogilvies in my life.

Thank you all guys for being there...

I have this code, no syntax error, but it won't run. Who can help me fix it?

TheAnswerOf = _
theRuleThat(Pi - Are - Sqr()) - _
isThat(Not Pi - Are - Sqr(), _
Cake - Are - Sqr(), _
Pi - Are - Round(LOL))

I just started coming to this NG about 1.5 years ago, learning VBA
almost from scratch. I've gotten incredible help here from a number of
people, and I've found this to be one of the best NGs of any kind that
I frequent. I can tell you this, when I see a reply to my question, or
anyone elses, from Tom Ogilvy, I'm very confident that not only is it a
correct answer, but that it's a very sophisticated answer. Tom knows XL
as well as anyone here, and knows how to write effective, fast-running
code.

I understand that his solution might be more complex than you expected,
he's taking into account factors you and I haven't even dreamed of yet.
Most likely, his code will run in situations where the simple fix you
imagined won't work.

If he's smoking anything, I'd like to get my hands on some! :)

Sorry to jump in late on this one, but couldnt let it slip!

Tom Ogilvy stands up as one of my most respected people at the moment,
amongst quite a few people on here there are a bunch of people who
spend what must be hours of their time helping people for no gain that
I can see.

I think it is well harsh to post out with a slate when the answer
really just needed clarifying, regardless of what I thought of a
response on here I would first ask for clarification before slating
them.

I would also love to find Toms grower if it is in fact something he
smokes that makes him the person he is.

(without shadowing the topic here, just want to mention that I have
only been on here for 4 months now or so, and already recognise most of
the names near the top of that statistic list from them helping me at
some point, this is definately a top NG for help and support)

Stella/Harry,

Go pound sand! Tom has been awesome in helping me and, as it seems, many
others in this newsgroup. Tom, you're awesome!

"Who exactly is Tom Ogilvy?"

The best excel genius around. And who is Stella/Harry? Some nobody
running his mouth off way too much...

Thanks for your great work Tom!!

You are all absolutely right. Tom deserves nothing but respect.
Just keep in mind that "Stella" is probably enjoying the flames he/she
has sparked.

C

Charlie

I disagree. I think that "Stella" was expecting a simple answer like

Worksheets("sheet2").Printout

and didn't understand that the loop example was just that...an example!
Tom's answers are always right on, and he even goes the extra mile to explain
more than necessary. In this case the OP simply didn't get it. No need to
think he/she was trying to start a fire. Just trying to learn like the rest
of us.
