Who wins in MOPS 2007? Local Global VS Enterprise Global.

I

Ivor Davies

I need to find out which one takes precedence in Microsoft Project 2007
(connected to Project Server 2007).

If I have defaults / options set in the ENTERPRISE GLOBAL template (stored
on the Project Server) and different options set on my LOCAL GLOBAL template
(stored on my computer for when I work either offline / not connected to the
server), I need to know which one takes control.

For example we have some scheduling options set within the ENTERPRISE GLOBAL
that for some reason are not displayed properly. If I want to make sure that
all clients connected to the Project Server have the EXACT SAME OPTIONS, do I
have to make the settings in the ENTERPRISE GLOBAL and copy my LOCAL GLOBAL
template to all clients computers as well?

Does anybody have any information on this or can you point me in the right
direction?

Thank You.

You are misunderstanding the purpose of the Enterprise Global file in
Project Server 2007. The Enterprise Global is your organization's "library"
of custom enterprise Views, Tables, Filters, Groups, Reports, etc. It is
NOT the location in which the Project Server administrator can set Options
settings for every user of Project Professional 2007. The Options settings
must be specified by each user for his/her own copy of Project Professional
2007. Hope this helps.

You will notice on the Options tabs that the sections are labeled, say on the
View tab, Cross project linking options for 'Project1' or Currency options
for 'Project1', these options are set on a project by project basis.

So if these are set on the template before it is saved then it will use them
when users access Enterprise Templates.

We create an options document explaining what these do and what the
standards are for a particular company and have that available on a share
drive for users to set theirs to. Most of these are NOT affected by the
Enterprise Global and each user must set the "Global" ones for their use in
2007.

Thanks for your feedback Sean.

I found some other usefull information in the Project 2007 Inside / Out Book
by MS Press - Page 1004 discusses the differences between the Project
template / Project global template / Enterprise global template.

It would appear that if we set the schedule / task type options in our
project templates, that these should be propagated to any NEW projects using
these templates. As for definining the project options - these are saved in
the project global template on the local PC. These options are not set within
the enterprise global template as I originally thought - the enterprise
global is used for setting default views / tables / macros / filters /etc. Is
this assumption correct?

Please advise....

Thank You.

Yes, the change from 2003 to 2007 with moving the global items to PWA Server
Settings changes quite a bit about what the Pro Global does, but you are
correct in that you set the defaults for Pro there.

Each time a user opens Pro, they get the latest Enterprise Global added to
their Local Global, this is what you see with the Organizer at the bottom for
Views available in: Global (+ non-cached Enterprise).

Ivor,
Just one point:
The Tools/ Options of Project Pro are not saved in the local GLOBAL.MPT but
in the Registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\MS Project\Options
excepted for the currency which can be set by the administrator at the
enterprise level.
The local GLOBAL.MPT file contains all the items you can find in the
Organizer dialog box : Views, Tables, Filters,...

Hope this helps,
