whole doc takes on the formatting added to one word!

This ongoing, erratic problem is a true pain!

An entire document takes on whatever feature I am trying to add to a
selected area of text - centering, bolding, font-size changes, any formatting
change, even though only a single block is highlighted (i.e., one word, one
line, one table). This occurs at work, where we use Word 2000; as well as at
home, where I have Word 2003.

When I click 'undo,' the doc reverts to its previous formatting, leaving the
chosen special formatting on the specific text I was attempting to change.
This happens without warning, not all the time, and with any feature being
used - sometimes in tables, sometimes not. Sometimes in straight text,
sometimes not. Doesn't matter if I have a graphic or other addition in the
document.

I have disabled automatic auto-correct and auto-format options and clicked
on the detect-and-repair option at the office, which is networked (meaning
the Word 2000 program is controlled by our IT Dept and I have limited access
and authority). The IT people can't seem to fix this issue. I have
performed the above and have also reloaded the Word 2003 software on my home
PC, all to no avail.

Does anyone else have this problem? I'd love some direction and/or advice!
THANKS!
