Whole doc (with table) moves to the right

I¹ve used Word since v 4 but I don¹t know what¹s going on here at all.

I have a doc with a table (multiple columns, multiple rows). Suddenly,
if I make any change to the contents or width of any column,
_everything_ (the table and paragraphs above and below) moves slightly
to the right. Make enough changes in the table and it goes right off
the edge of the page.

The margin lines stay where they are; the contents of the page simply
move away from the left line, as if hewing to an invisible line. The
Ruler shows no signs of any indentation. Style does not show any
changes. In Paragraph, I find that some cells in the middle of the
table are listed as having a -0.04 for the right margin; changing that
to 0 does not help (but neither does it move the table and graphs). I
did do some pasting into cells, which is probably where that -0.04 came
from, but why would that move everything on the page?

I¹ve saved as an RTF. Doesn¹t help.

So I hope somebody here knows the answer.

Thanks!

Check that you do not have Tracked Changes switched on. If you do, turn it
off and accept all changes.

I am wondering whether you are creating a new column that you can't see
because you have Track Changes turned on but hidden.

But it sounds as though you are picking up an indent or a hanging indent.
The hanging indent may be coming from a list numbering style that is not
visible. Which style are you using?

Cheers

Oh: One more thought... I am sure you have indeed been using Word since
V4. But in order to answer this question, we need to know which one,
exactly, that you are using NOW :)

Sorry. Using 2008 (12.1.2) - all up to date.

Here¹s a specific example of the problem. I have one column which is
3.63 in, and the next is 3.57. I use Cell Height & Width to make the
first column .03 narrower and the second .03 wider, so the width of the
table remains the same. The changes get made, and then, after a beat,
everything on the page moves slightly to the right. It¹s as if the
whole page is keyed to the right margin of the first column, so that
narrowing the column causes everything to draw in from the right page
margin.

I¹m not aware of using any style. This is a table I¹ve had through
several iterations of Word, and there¹s no list numbering involved.
It¹s just a grid of rows and columns, very straightforward (though some
data uses a different font color).

I¹m also not aware of using Track Changes. I never have deliberately
used it, so I don¹t know any way to turn it on or off (prefs just says
what it¹ll do if used, and the Tools Menu item says what it can be used
for, but where¹s on/off?).

I, too, would guess it¹s an indent problem, but see my other post today
for how it works. I have no idea how an indent in a table could affect
the table¹s placement on the page...

Thanks for your help so far. Keep it up :)

Ah! That sounds like the Auto Height and Width has kicked it.

Go into the Table menu and set Autofit and Distribute to "Fixed Column
Width".

If that doesn't fix it, flip me a small sample -- I need to see what is
going on there.

Email in the .sig

Cheers
