why all font options are gray

In Word 2007, I am editing a document prepared by someone else. All the font
stuff is grayed out: Font, Paragraph, Bullets... Styles is ok, but that
doesn't help...

Sounds like it's been protected using "Limit formatting to a selection of
styles."
