Why am I asked for the network password regularly ?

A

Andrew Connolly

I am constantly - every 5-10 minutes - asked to enter my network password for
my POP email accounts in Outlook 2003.

Email checking is every 1 minute, so it's not EVERY single time that it does
a send/receive that it is asking for me to enter my network password, but
it's often enough to give me the irrates ...

My POP accounts are all set up to save the password - which is specified
correctly - all I need to do is hit <enter> and it connects succefully each
time, with connection settings as either "LAN" or "I.E. / 3rd party dialler"
(makes no difference) on all accounts.

The network setup is that I have is a 4 port D-Link router permanently
connected to the internet, with 3 PC's connected to it. Firewall is on the
router, no firewalls on the PC's.

I have 4 POP email accounts, and from time to time, ALL of them "fail",
requiring me to "enter" my already-saved email.

What makes it worse is that Outlook Express on the same machine with the
same accounts and same settings works fine - never prompting me for password,
so I'm doubting it's a network issue.

Extraordinarily frustrated - and thoroughly sick of hitting the <enter> key
every 5 minutes when it interrupts my work - Outlook user.

Andrew, I am having the same problem. It is very irritating. I am waiting
to see what type of response you get, hopefully it may help me also.

#1 - checking for new mail every minute is much too often. Set it for every
8 -10 min, minimum. When new mail arrives and it takes outlook longer than 1
min to complete the process, a second mail check begins before the first
ends and it can cause problems.

Well firstly, thank-you for your suggestions.
In fact though, I did none of these ...

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=820863
(I was using XP SP 1 already)

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=298589
(Didn't get the error message, and clicking SPA didn't help either,
unsurprising since it is not an exchange server)

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=236032
(Again, not an Exchange based account)

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290684
(Actually, this could have been it, but see note below)

After much to-ing and fro-ing with MS support, (and including an unnecessary
re-install), it turns out that simply removing all email accounts and
re-entering them manually did the trick. Note that the first time around, I
imported accounts from Outlook Express (which had in turn been imported from
a previous computer's exported file)

Glad it's gone, that was killing me.

I did push it out, but it didn't make any diference.

See note in response to Brian's question:

One of his suggested fixes (the last one for me) may have worked had I tried
it.

Cheers,

importing accounts and upgrading outlook 2000 accounts is always
problematic. Had you mentioned the were imported, I would have told you to
make a new profile from the start.
