Why am I dropping the document link when linked to a task?

1. First I upload a document to a document library.
2. Then I link the document to a task. When I go back to project view I
see the document is linked to the task. After using the link a couple of
times, it works fine. Then let's say a day has passed, now when I look at
the project in "Project View" using PWA (Project Web Access) I don't see the
document liniked to the task anymore. Why is this happening?

A few others have had the same thing happen. One large client of mine lost
all task-level document links on all their projects -- twice!

I was discussing this issue just yesterday with a MS Exec, and I told him I
hadn't heard of any recurrences since early April. Now that I have, I'm
going to see if I can get some traction with the development team.

One possible clue I just now picked up:

Does your SQL Server have Oracle Client installed?

I have been experiencing this problem on a regular basis. What I do to make
the links re-appear is add a hyperlink view in the summary view, save it,
then remove the view. Then they magically reappear.

I don't see why Microsoft doesn't address this issue or even acknowledge it.

Why would the Oracle client matter? My Server does not have an Oracle
client installed. You aren't talking about the ODBC Driver for Oracle in the
ODBC settings are you? That is automattically installed. You must be
refering to the actual Client program for oracle.

Please update me personally with any news if you can.

I don't know why Oracle Client would have an effect, only that I have a
client who installed it, started having all their doc links disappear,
stopped using Oracle Client, and have not had a recurrence. Could be a
coincidence.

I just got a note suggesting another cause is editing a document from the
Datasheet view. But, that seems to cause only one doc link to disappear, not
all of them.

It would seem there are multiple variations on the disappearing link
problem, and more than one cause.

Hoo boy!

I had the craziest dream last night... I dreamt that Microsoft called me on
the phone and asked me about the disappearing links issue and they told me
that they were going to work on it tirelessly and call me back when they have
a solution.

Then I woke up and realized that that would NEVER happen.

Links are gone again this morning. I used my little trick of adding a view
then removing it in the projects view and they are back..... This is getting
just plain silly.

Well, maybe they won't call you up in the middle of the night, but I think
this issue is starting to get some traction. I've traded a few more e-mails
with one of my MS contacts, and he certainly appreciates the seriousness.

Let's give it a little more time, and see what happens. Meanwhile, sweet
dreams! :)

It may, I will check on this today. The reason I say this is normally we are
an Oracle shop, but we all know Project Server 2003 works with SQL Server.
I'll let you know when I find out. Thanks for the feedback.

Actually I'm glad to hear I'm not in this problem alone. After I posted this
problem on this site, I called one of my Microsoft contacts and reported the
problem to her. She put out an inquiry to their Microsoft Community, then
later called me back and said their development staff is aware of this
problem and they are working on a solution to fix it. At this time she
cannot give me a projected date when this fix will be implemented. Some
comfort here, it seems Microsoft is doing something about the problem. I
will have to follow up with her, maybe in about two weeks.

I just found a scenario that will cause documents to lose there link to a
task and that is if you delete a project that is stored in PWA. I deleted a
project by starting MS Project, doing an Open, highlighting a project and
hitting the delete key. In PWA on the project screen it still shows that the
project has documents in Sharepoint but none of the tasks have any documents
linked to them.

Are other people running into this problem??? If so please let me know.
