Why am I getting errors sometimes when trying to save my shared w.

I have a shared workbook on our server. Everyone in the office needs to have
access to this workbook, as it contains our estimators' schedules. I have
the file as a shared workbook on the server. Sometimes the file functions
just fine- we all can access and add to the sheets with no problem.
Sometimes, however, I get the following message:
"Your changes could not be saved to 'Joes scheule.xls.' but were saved to a
temporary document named 'F3AD4000'. Close the existing document, then open
the temporary document and save it under a new name."

It then saves this temporary document as a "file" instead of an "Excel
worksheet". This is very incovenient and causes problems in the office
because some individuals are still trying to access the original worksheet
and getting a message that says:
"Unexpected file lock by Heather. Please try again, and then if neccessary
use the share workbook command (tools menu) to turn off sharing."

I get this message whether someone else or I was the last one to access the
worksheet before the error. The only thing that changes is the name.

This is really a nightmare! We are a very busy office and while I am trying
to get everyone off the server worksheet so that I can open the temporary
file and save it as an excel sheet, the phones are ringing and someone needs
to get into the worksheet.

What can I do to avoid this? I cannot find a definite cause for this issue-
it seems rather random. It has happened to all of us at least once. Please
help!
