Why are all of my word documents locked?

All of the Word documents refuse to be edited and the Message
"This modification is not allowed becuase the document is locked."
at the botttem of the screen.
I do not know why this is happening I dod nothing to cause this that I know
of.

The usual reasons are because you have not activated the software, or because
you have an expired trial version of Office 2003. What happens if you click
