Why are AOL email and Outlook 2003 not compatible?

My Dell M1210 Laptop starts sending error memory messages as soon as I setup
my email account through the AOL IMAP setup procedure. Eventually, my
computer crashes. Dell says that AOL/IMAP is not compatible with Outlook.
Help!

What does AOL say? What are the exact error messages?

Microsoft steps to set up OL2k3 with AOL, so I'm not quite sure what your
Dell tech was talking about.
