why are blocks replacing words on a document?

I was working on editing a book, about 500 pages long, and before I could
finish editing the document, sections of the document were missing words,
whole pages were missing information and all of the information was replaced
by blocks. Where is the information? The book was saved as a complete
document and now there are whole pages missing words that have been replaced
by blocks.

I'm interested in the progress of this as I make a living editing books. A
couple of things come to mind: What version of Word? How are you sure the
omissions/problems have just happened and were not in the original document?
Exactly what do you mean 'replaced by blocks'? Have you tried saving a copy
of the document in HTM form (shows up many errors)? When editing, did you
use search and replace and might you have requested something that you
didn't really intend? Do you normally work with shorter documents and have
not had this problem? What happens if you start again from the original (you
*did* save the original as an untouched document, didn't you?)?

I hope you/we sort this out. It must be somewhat worrying!

Is it just text that is missing or are their object, tables, graphics in the
document? Is Track Changes enabled? If it is, Accept All Changes and toggle
off Track Changes.

Please provide some other details Aallaan requested.
