Why are connectors grey after I make autoshapes for flowchart?

In word, I really wanted to make a probability tree diagram for maths but
couldn't find how to do that. I did find how to make a flowchart so followed
instructions ok for making some autoshapes. Then it wouldn't let me select
any connectors as they were all grey not black and thus unavailable.

I am sorry I don't know the answer to your question, but I suggest that
MS PowerPoint, if you have it would be a more likely program for what you
are doing.

Hi Maths,

If you're in Word in a version earlier than 2007 the connectors only work inside of a drawing canvas(MS Draw). It's available from
Insert=>Picture=>New Drawing
