Why are display settings changing when word opens

All of a sudden, when I open Word (from Office 2003 Pro), my screen goes
black for a second and then the display settings change from 1074x768 to
640x480 and the color changes from 16 bit to 256? As soon as I exit Word,
the screen flickers again and then my display goes back to normal.

With Word closed, use Windows Explorer or My Computer to browse to the
WINWORD.EXE file on your hard drive. The default location for this file is
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11, but it may be different in your
installation. Right-click on WINWORD.EXE, and left-click on Properties |
Compatibility | uncheck the "Run in 256 colors" and "Run in 640x480 screen
resolution" boxes | OK.
