Why are inserted picutres automatically resized?

Every time I insert a picture into a Microsoft Word 2003 document, it appears
to be automatically resized. For example, if I paste into a document a photo
that I KNOW is 640x480 pixels, it shows up smaller in the document. When I
right click on the photo and select "Format Picture..." and select the "Size"
tab, it indicates that the original was 341x256 pixels (which is definitely
not true since Windows, Corelle and several other programs all indicate it is
640x480). So, what's up with that? I want to be able to insert a picture
and have it be the same size as the original really is, not some smaller
version. I've tried to find a setting somewhere that controls any resizing
of picutres when inserted, but havent' found anything. If anyone knows how
to fix this, please let me know. Thanks.

I had the same question, see the replies I got at - "Need to Insert Picture
so Word keeps the pixel size", about a page ago.

Word scales imported graphics according to the resolution setting. You need
to make a distinction here between pixel as a measure of distance and pixel
as a measure of resolution. If you have Word set to work at 96 dpi (the
default) and you import a graphic that started life 5 cm wide at 300dpi,
Word will display it 15.6 cm wide (5 x 300 / 96).

The trick is to prepare the graphic before importing it: set the size you
want to end up with, then adjust the resolution to match the setting in
Word.
Word's dpi setting is at Tools > Options > General > Web Options > Pictures.

Or failing all that, simply resize the graphic after you've imported it.

I hope this doesn't mean that Word is going to print using the new 96 dpi
resolution.
