Why are line numbers preceded by bullet(!)?

Using MSWord 2000, when I turn on line numbering [1],
the line numbers are preceded by a bullet. The bullets
appear both on the screen and when the document is
printed.

When the same document file is viewed using MSWord 2003,
the bullet prefixes are not there. (Good.)

Any idea why the bullet prefix appears when using MSWord
2000?

More importantly, any idea how to get rid of the bullet
prefixes?

I am not sure they were always there. I was surprised
to see them. I think I would have noticed them earlier,
if they were there. So it is possible that I did
something advertently that enabled the bullet prefixes.
I am hoping there is an option to disable them.
