Why are most fonts are displaying as rectangles?

And the ones that display correctly are line breaking in the middle of words
and in front of spaces.... ughh!!! I could do better with a typewriter.

That sounds like a typical corrupt or incompatible printer driver. First
check at the Printer support site to make sure that you have the latest
driver, then delete and reinstall the printer using the correct driver.

Thanks Terry. I deleted every printer on my system including a real laser
printer, Acrobat pdf, Acrobat Distiller, and the MS office document capture
printer.

Then I rebooted... but XP refound my laser printer and installed it.

However, in WORD I still cannot properly view most fonts on my Screen.
It looks the same as before.

Any more ideas? I plan to try re-installing MSOffice... and I need to
create .pdf's so I have to re-install Acrobat 5.0 to get those drivers.

Yes I can printout the rectangles... WISIWIG

It seems that after deleting printers that newly typed documents work as
expected... only the previously typed documents are suffering this fate.

If you haven't saved the document(s) while they looked and acted weird, Word probably just still thinks you use a symbol font for your text:
Look in "Tools > Compatibility > Font substitution"...
Perhaps changing to a sensible font there fixes the problems.

If you have saved while the boxes were visible, you have changed the encoding of the text characters, and would need a macro to fix it:
