Why are most of my icons greyed out and I can't type anything?

When I open any of my Office 2003 Pro products, most of my icons are greyed
out and I can't type anything into new document or edit an existing one. I
have tried repairing and re-installing to no avail.
Please help as I have a dissertation to write. Many thanks in advance.

Did you actually pay for Office or are you using a pre-installed trial
version?
