Why are my e-mails being sent as spam?

When I send e-mails, even to contacts, they are being received as spam.
Instead of my e-mails being placed in the inbox of the person I'm sending
them to, they are being put in the spam or junk mail folder. How do I stop
this?

Have those people add you to their Safe Senders list or whatever the white
list is called in the spam program they're using
