Why are read items permanently deleted in outlook 2003?

When I delete an e-mail that has been read, it does not appear in the Deleted
Folder. If the e-mail is "unread" it appears in the Deleted Folder. This
has been happening for only 2-3 days. I am not Auto-Archiving anything.

check the view you are using in the Deleted Items folder. You may be set to
show only unread items.
