Why are Sent Items showing as Unread?

I am running Office 2003 on Windows XP Pro, each with all of the regular
automatic updates. Try as I might, I cannot stop emails that I have composed
and sent from Outlook from appearing as Unread in the Sent Items folder. I do
actually read my emails before I send them! Does anybody know how I can fix
this?

I have just noticed that when I sent an email with a large attachment, it
went straight to the Sent Items folder rather than the Outbox. I suspect that
this is the problem, does anybody know how to fix this?
