Why are single letters not flagged as misspelled?

If you are to type a sentence, "The quick brown fox e jumped over the lazy
dog", Word 2003 does not catch the "e" as a misspelled word nor does it catch
it as a grammer mistake. This seems to be true with any single letter;
substitute the "e" above for a "t" or an "s" and it still slips by.

Why is this? Any way to change it?

It's by design, single letters are not flagged because they are often used
in numbering.

AFAIK it cannot be changed.
