why are some attachments are received as win.dat files

Some recipients of my email advise that the attached files come accross as
win.dat files rather than Word or Excel files. I have changed my settings to
plain text rather than rich text hoping that will fix the problem. Too
early to tell. Does anyone else have any insight?
