why are text characters appearing on a new slide in a new file?

Every time I open an new ppt file the new slides already have a format and
what appears to be a line of text that is stacked up in a pile. I cannot
click on it to select it therefore I cannot delete it. I did get rid of it
by deleting the slide. Where is the text coming from? Secondly, when I try
to add a text box and then add text in it, it is all piled on top of each
other. Why doesn't text appear normally. I have tried to adjust character
spacing but that is set at normal and setting it looser does not help.

See if there is a file called "blank.pot" on your computer. Location depends
on your OS version. Rename it and see if that takes care of the issue. If
it does it means that is the culprit and you can either choose to delete or
repair it.

I think I solved it. A window popped up on my computer asking me to insert
the driver disk that came with my printer. I didn't know why at the time and
thought it was strange, but did so. I finished my other work on the computer
and shut it down. Later when I started the computer up again, I could open
all the previous PPT files. This must have been the solution although I did
not know how to do this on my own. What would have prompted the pop-up to
appear on my computer?? I have been working on this for several days and it
showed up now. Just curious
