Why are the wrong characters displayed?

I have an Dell Inspiron 1150 with the keyboard configured for UK usage.

When MS Word 2003 is used the keyboard sometimes returns the wrong
characters and the right align does left align and vice-versa?

Notepad has no problems.

Any ideas would be appreciated?
