why can Excel open dbase4 and not import it ???

I am trying to import data from a dbase4 file. I can open it with excel 2002
and view the data but since it has about 95000 records, I tried to import
the data with a filter to view only records between 65000 and 95000 but then
Excel only shows the headers and no data. I tried without a filter, creating
a dsn connection, nothing, nada, no data -- only the headers. I am a bit
lost here. Any ideas anyone ?
