Why can I no longer access Word, Outlook, Excel and FrontPage?

M

mumdadplus3

Not long ago I bought this computer with Windows XP Home addition and Office
Xpl Professional with FrontPage preinstalled.
Now I can no longer access Office applications. Eg When I try to open Word I
am prompted to insert the Microsoft Office XP Proffessional with FrontPage
disc or search for PROPLUS.msi.
I definately don't have a disk and cannot find PROPLUS.msi.
When I look in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10 all the files
seem to be there.
Do I need the disk or is there some way to repair these files from the
information that is on the hard drive.
If I need the disc can I use someone elses?
Also can anyone hazard a guess as to what happened?

While I'm not sure, it could be that the Office you had preinstalled only
came with a trial and now the trial's up. Lots of computers come with a
trial version of Office these days. Again though, I'm not sure that this is
the problem.

You have a time limited version that should have warned you of its expiry..
you will have to purchase MS Office if you wish to continue using it, or
consider another product..

I've never heard of an OEM that came with FrontPage.

Can you open the other Office programs?

It must have been installed by the previous owner.. the version with Front
Page was kicking around in pirated form aways back, and may still be.. I am
not sure if there was ever a trial version..

When I left click start - All Programs - I have Microsoft Access, Microsoft
Word, Microsoft Outlook , Microsoft Excel and Microsoft FrontPage

When I left click on any of those a Windows Installer box opens telling me
"preparing to install" .

Another box then appears telling me "Please wait while Windows configures
Microsoft Office XP Professional with Frontpage".

Yet another box tells me to "insert the Microsoft Office XP Professional
with Frontpage disk and click OK".

I don't have this disk because they were preinstalled.( I have a Windows XP
Home edition disk but I suspect this won't help me.)

I then click cancel and I get this message "Error 1706. Set up cannot find
the required files. Check your connection to the required network or CD-ROM
drive. For other potential solutions to this problem see C:\Program
Files\Microsoft\Office\Office 10\1033\SETUP.HLP". I then click OK.

Yet another box telling me there is a "Problem with shortcut. Fatal error
during installation."

When I look in the c drive at the above all the files are there.

I also am very certain that this was not a trial version of the above as I
have been using them since February and everything has been OK. I strongly
suspect that my children have something to do with this problem.

I also have Outlook Express 6 which is working just fine.

"Office XP Professional with Front Page" is an enterprise
(volume-license) version. As a single user, you should not have
this version. I'm not sure how you were able to get this version
in February, because legitimate system builders stopped
preinstalling this version several years ago. Face the facts...
you are using illegal/pirated/bootleg/stolen software...
uninstall it, and purchase and install a legal copy of Office.

Ah ha! I knew that didn't sound right.

In respect for the OP, we can't be sure that he knowing bought a bootleg
copy. Let's assume he was another computer purchaser who didn't really
understand what he was getting.

As you may have read, the specific edition of Office was not one that was
sold by OEMs and there is a possibility that it was not a legal copy.

I would suggest two things. One, go back to the computer dealer. Your post
implies the system is only 9 months old so it may still be under warranty.
Ask them about the software issue. If it was a private sale, then you were
supposed to get the disks. Period. If you didn't, then you were ripped off
and the person who sold the system and software to you is breaking the law.

Knowing all of this is not going to help you fix your problem tho, is it? I
would suggest you start saving your pennies because the only way you are
going to be able to run Office again is to purchase it.

And please don't be too hard on the children. They may not have had anything
to do with the problem. And when you do get a fully legal copy of Office,
I'd suggest you learn how to set up different accounts for them and make
sure your Administrator account is password protected so that they can't
booger up the system.

Thanks for your help. If this was an illegal copy I was not aware and bought
everything in good faith.

Computer programs are so dear here in Australia, about $AU300.00 for Office,
so I am pretty upset that things seem to be on the computer and I can't
access them.

Also we all have different user accounts and I am the administrator so it
seems that it may have been me!!!!
