why can i no longer open excel attachments in outlook 2007

i can no longer open .xls files directly from an outlook email that they are
attached to. i now must save and then open them in excel. major time
waster, don't always want to save every .xls attachment i receive.

Well, what happens when you try and what exactly are you doing that doesn't
