Why Can't I Change Source a Link to an HTTP resource

M

Mark Palandri

To reproduce the problem, execute the following series of steps:

1) Open a new blank document in Word 2003
2) Select the Insert/Picture/From File... command
3) Enter the following URL into the "File name" field (actually, any HTTP
URL will work): http://www.microsoft.com/wn3/gif/newquestion.gif
4) Drop-down the Insert button menu and click on "Link to File". The image
should have appeared.
5) Select Edit/Links...
6) Select the one link from the list and click on the "Change Source" button.
7) Enter the following URL (again, any HTTP URL will work):
http://www.microsoft.com/wn3/gif/leaf.gif
8) Click the Open button

It is at this point that a dialog appears with the following message: "You
cannot use an Internet address here. Enter a path that points to a location
on your computer or on the network"

Does anyone know why it is that I can create a link to an HTTP URL but that
I cannot change the source of an existing link to an HTTP URL? Looks like a
bug to me.

I suppose that I can always remove the old link and create a brand new one
to a second HTTP URL, but I can't think of a good reason for why Change
Source won't allow me to do this directly.

Hi Mark,

I suspect it has to do with the change link dialog
having an 'open' control on it that may be causing it.

Microsoft has logged it as an open issue for review.
