Why can't I change the font size and sometimes the font?

I read through a similar problem in a discussion group but didn't see the
solution.
My Word has suddenly started having problems with changing the font size and
sometimes the font itself. I use common fonts such as Arial and Comic Sans
in the 8 to 14 size range.
I first saw this happen when I was copying some online articles into Word
and assumed it was a problem within the article font. Now I am also having
the problem with just native Word docs that I am creating myself.
How do I fix this?
