Why can't I embed nonlinked objects in EXCEL2003?

I previously embedded objects referencing text files in Excel 2000. When
upgrading to Excel 2003, this does not work. Objects only work if linked to
existing files. This appears to be an application error in the new program.
Is there any workaround or has this been fixed in future upgrades?
