Why can't I make changes to a saved document?

I am new to using microsoft word for my labels, so bear with me. I
need to make changes such as changing some text and moving some images
in a saved label template. How do I do this? I've tried a million
times and can't figure out how.

Open the template, make the changes, save. What went wrong the 897,543rd
time you tried it?
