Why can't I open files when I click on Save As to save a doc?

When I try to save a document & click on Save As, I cannot open the files
already created. It will save the doc in My Documents, but I usually want to
put them in a file. This just started happening. Is there a setting I need to
change? I have plenty of space on my hard-drive, so I don't think it's
'overloaded' with docs.
