Why can't I see the sub-folders of a shortcut folder?

In XP, when I clicked a folder shortcut, it took me directly to that folder
on a local shared drive where I could see all the subfolders associated with
it and access messages within those subfolders. In 2003, the only thing I
get back from a shortcut are the active messages in the folder -- no
subfolders. Is there a way to fix this?

Are you talking about windows folders or Outlook folders? (There is no XP
version of Outlook and access to psts is not supported on network drives.)
