Why can't I stop the task pane opening in Visio?

Whenever I open a Visio document (using Visio 2003), the task pane opens
automatically. Although I have tried to switch this off (in
Tools/Options/View), it keeps happening with every document I open. As I am
working with a number of Visio documents at a time, this is pretty annoying!
