Why can't I use backspace to delete a selected text?

Somehow I cannot use backspace nor can I overwrite a selected text when using
Word (this only applies to Word, not to other programs), the only way to
delete a text is to use backspace without selecting (one character at a time)
or to use the delete key. Can anybody tell me why it does that and preferably
how to fix this?

Put a check mark back into the box at Tools, Options, Edit, "Typing
replaces selection".
