Why can't open some hyperlinked documents that browser can?

In other versions of Word, including Word on the Mac, I can enter a hyperlink
to a .PDF document on the web and later open the document using the link. In
Word 2007 some of these documents won't open using the hyperlink I inserted,
even though they will open from a browser. Why?

The message I get is, "Unable to open
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/Forms/Rent/ra79.pdf. Cannot open the specified
file." But the file opens fine from a browser and the link works fine when I
open Word document in an older version of Word.

Word does not support opening PDF files. No version ever has done so.
Although you can Save a Word 2007 document into PDF format (with the
appropriate free add-in), you cannot open them.

If you have been able to open PDFs in versions of Word, then you must have a
third party tool installed such Adobe Acrobat Professional: even then it has
to do a conversion to open in Word.
