Why did my trial version of Office expire immediately after activa

I just bought a laptop with a 60-day trial of Office 2007 installed on it.
I activated Office today, typed the registration code, etc. The pop-up box
said the trial will expire June 30.
Now, an hour later, the programs aren't working any more. The commands are
all disabled, I get dialogue boxes telling me the trial has expired.
Anybody know what happened?
