why did spell check not flag flag cotrary (contrary)?

English is my native language. no word that I know of is spelled "cotrary".
The word I would expect is spelled "contrary". Yet spell check did not flag
the misspelled "cotrary". I checked the custom dictionary -- no entry. What
gives? Now I am afraid to ever trust spell check.

Select the word. Go to Tools | Language | Set Language. Is the appropriate
flavor of English selected. Is the box for "Do not check spelling and
grammar" clear?
