Why did the "Picture Styles" part of the task pane disappear?

I am trying to format a picture from a square to a circle. My "Picture Tools"
and "Format" task pane options appear, but instead of a subsection of
"Picture Styles" it shows "Shadow Effects." I used that effect on a prior
photo, but don't know how to reset the task bar to show the "Picture Styles"
subsection so that I can do different effects. Can anyone help?

I am not familiar with the particular tool you are trying to use, but if you
select "View", then "Toolbars" -> and "Customize" every available option can
be added to your toolbar. Perhaps just look through both the toolbar and
command lists and see if you can find it. Once you find it if you want you
can select your "normal" setting so that the tool shows up in all word
documents based on your normal template so you don't have to try to find it
again. It sounds like you have a setting that only show your top most
commonly used tools and that is why your favorites come and go.

Hi J.J.,

Did you save the file as a Word 2007 .docx format or a Word 2003 .doc one?
If you saved as Word 2003 you won't have access to the Word 2007 Picture/Quick Styles until you use 'Office Button=>Convert'
