I've had the same problem for a couple years. I don't remember when it started, but it may have been with installing Office 2007.
When working on a Word document (stored on a local drive), usually I can edit and save normally. But once in a while, when I save, I get the message "This file is read-only." followed by the path and file name in parentheses. The Read-only file attribute in Explorer is always CLEAR when this happens (the attribute is clear before, during, and after the problem).
This problem occurs on all three machines I use, on both XP and Win7. My solution is to save the file with a new name, delete the old file, and rename the new file to the old file name. This works, but it's a pain.

Why do all Word documents become read-only?

Recently, when editing information in one of my word documents, I am
prompted to do another copy because the original is a "read-only" copy. I do
not see anything marked in Security. How come this is happening and how do I
eliminate it?

This is usually because of an incompatible third party add-in.
This is usually because of an incompatible third party add-in. To test for
this, run Word in safe Mode. From Start, Run (Winkey+R) type in
winword /a
and press enter. This will start Word in its default install mode bypassing
all customizations and add-ins, etc. Open a document, make some edits and
see if you can now edit it correctly. If you can, then check for add-ins.
See how to find add-ins

I also have this problem with MS Word 2007.
I also have this problem with MS Word 2007. While editing some documents,
some of the time, they randomly become Read-Only.
I'll check for Add-Ins, but I'm pretty sure I have none. My PC is brand new
with a clean Office install...

Is your problem identical?
Is your problem identical? Are your documents all read only when you try to
open them or do you find that they open OK and save a few times and then
suddenly become Read Only on their own? How did you move the documents to
your new computer?
Terry
1. I create a new MS Word document and typing.2.
1. I create a new MS Word document and typing.
2. The document becomes Read-Only after working on it for a while.. while
it's open.
3. I save it out using a new filename, then open that file.
NOTE: I can change the Read-Only property of the original file once it's
closed.. I don't lose any work in all this.. but it is annoying.

This problem has been found to be caused by incompatible networking
utilities. Are you standalone or running over a network to a file server?
