why do arrows appear in word document one above and one below lin.

A word document I am working in has an arrow appear from nowhere above and
below a line of text? How did this occur and how do I remove it without
delecting the text?

Thanks Klaus, I wondered if it might have something to do with tabs and
showing the formatting, but it doesn't fit if they don't appear anywhere else
in the document or does it?. I hadn't used the formatting button.

Hi Tanya,

Do they look like in the article, and do they disappear when you don't show
the formatting characters (say by clicking on the ¶ button)?
Then they're definitely tabs.

They can be deleted just the same as other text (Backspace key, Delete key).
Or you could use "Find/Replace": You can find tabs under "Special" (or type
^t into "Find what"), and replace them with nothing (just leave "Replace
with" empty).

Tabs can be inserted by pressing the tab key (on the left side of the
keyboard, above the Shift and CapsLock keys).

Or if you didn't insert them on purpose, it might have been "Click & Type":

If you double-click somewhere in the document with the left mouse button,
Word will insert empty lines and tabs so that the text you type next appears
where you clicked.

I turn "click and type" off (...in Word's menu, Tools, Options, Edit tab, on
the bottom -- in Word2003), because I don't like to have empty paragraphs
and tabs in my document.

If the arrows don't look at all like in the article, maybe you can describe
them in more detail?

Regards,
Klaus

Hello Klaus

The only way the arrows could be removed was by deleting the text on the row
between them.

No other formatting symbols were shown throughout the document. I guess it
must just simply have been a temporary glitch.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Tanya

Oh and also Klaus, the arrows printed which also led me to believe it had
nothing to do with the show/hide feature shortcut

Definitely not tabs, they do not print. It might be easiest if you mail me
the doc (e-mail address removed) -- It sounds like some kind of graphic, but I
have no idea how they got into your document by accident.
My first guess from your description (since you don't seem to be able to
select the arrows themselves) would be a border:
In a paragraph you would have to delete to get rid of the arrows, open the
dialog "Format > Borders and Shading", Borders tab, and click on "none".
Does that make them go away?

Regards,
Klaus

Sorry Klaus this is not the answer. I am an advanced user of word and have
never come across a prblem like this before and have recently reverted to
deleting the text and rows above and below then re-typed the text to deal
with the problem.

Thank you for you input anyway.

Regards
Tanya

I'd be curious, too. Seeing this kind of problem helps us help future users.

Sorry Klaus I don't have a copy of the document with the problem any more.

Thank you kindly for your effort.
