Why do envelopes print part red and part black?

All my other printing comes out fine in black. But when I put in an envelope
and printed, the letters came out part red and part black. I positioned the
envelope on the right side of the paper support, as instructed for my Dell
A920 printer.

Note: as I write this, the letters on my monitor screen also show up in part
red/part black.
