why do i get an error message when trying to run office?

It took 10 hours to download the trial version of Office 2003. Then when I
attempted to run or install it, I received a message stating that "Office.exe
is not a valid Win32 application."

I had the same problem trying to install this on a friends pc this afternoon.
The computer has Windows XP
