Why do I get multiple copies of incoming emails using Outlook 2007

Since upgrading from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2007 I have been getting
occasional bursts of incoming emails - all of which have been already
received within the past two weeks or so. These episodes now seem to be
happening more frequently and I currently have up to four copies of each of
about 50 emails in my inbox. For example, an email first received on 24 July
was sent to me for the fourth time earlier this afternoon. All four copies
are still sitting in my inbox.

My ISP offers a high level of technical support but this problem has them
stumped. Sample checks of the affected emails showed that only one copy is
stored on their server, so it looks unlikely that the problem originates with
them. Outlook 2007 seems a more likely culprit.

Any explanations and/or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Brian,
Several scenarios are described in the link that you provided, but the only
one that seemed potentially relevant to my situation was that my virus
scanner was set up to check all incoming and outgoing emails (I use the free
version of the AVG virus scanner).

I have now disabled that aspect of AVG to see if it prevents any further
email duplications. However, it is not yet clear why it was never a problem
with Outlook 2000.

There's never any reason to scan incoming or outgoing mail for viruses. As
long as you run the AV program's on-access scanner you're safe, but the best
antivirus tool is between your ears. Simply don't open any message with an
attachment that you weren't expecting or from someone whose address you
don't recognize. As to why it might have worked before and not now, there
are several reasons that occur to me. One is that it may be necessary to
install the AV scanner after installing the mail program in order for the
integration to succeed properly. Upgrading Outlook without uninstalling and
reinstalling the scanner may prevent the scanner from hooking into the DLLs
properly.
